COMPANY HISTORY

Sandy Balls has become a haven for visitors seeking the quiet escape to country living since its owners, the Westlake family, welcomed their first guest almost 100 years ago.

Bought by Ernest Westlake in 1919, the family’s connection with Sandy Balls continues to this day. Ernest’s purchase of the estate was designed to both conserve its natural woodland and make it accessible to lovers of natural beauty – a motivation which is still at the heart of the Business operation today.

The holiday village itself was founded by Dr Aubrey Westlake and has grown and adapted down the years – from its origins as a beautiful retreat for camping, to the introduction of the first chalets in 1934 and the post-war arrival of caravans.

The centre’s quirky name has an even longer history. It can be traced as far back as the reign of Henry VII, when it appeared on maps and documents as “Sandyballas” – a description given to the dome-shaped sand and gravel outcrops on the centre’s western boundary.

The outcrops were formed in the Eocene era as the great ‘Eocene river’ – running at about 100 feet above its present level – slackened and deposited sand of considerable depth. Today’s holiday village is named after those gravel outcrops, many of which remain, the best examples being Good Friday Hill and Giant’s Grave.

This team is responsible for everything that keeps the village looking beautiful. The team looks after the accommodation and commercial building as well as ensuring the grounds are tidy.

Housekeeping

Ensuring the highest standards of cleanliness across the village to ensure our guests are comfortable.

Roles include: Housekeeping Assistants/Laundry Assistants/Team Leaders/Amenities Leisure, Hair and Beauty and Activities Swimming, Archery, Pampering or combat games… everything you need to keep you entertained active or pampered, this team ensures that you have a great time..

I have worked as a bar supervisor for 8 years in the Woodside Inn , and made many friends over the years, guests and workmates alike. I recently decided that I needed a change, so have now gone over to housekeeping which is hard work but very enjoyable as I am trusted to get on with the job.

Hi my name is Jax, It must have been 23 years ago when myself and my family came here on holiday and fell in love with Sandy Balls. We first visited with a little Monza caravan, and stayed in Northfield. We sold the caravan as the children were getting older and space was limited so we started to come and stay in one of the holiday homes (caravan), and for the last few years we stayed in a lodge. We enjoyed staying here so much, we said we would love to buy a holiday home so that we could visit more regularly so we bought one! By this time our 3 children were all grown up and 2 were married , the other at university. We asked the Managing Director if he would let us know should a property come up for sale and fortunately he had a plot in mind which had never been developed. We were thrilled as it was in a lovely position.

Our home was built and we were so excited when it arrived. We have never looked back and have been so happy over the last 6 years of being in our lovely home Rivendell. I have worked as a bar supervisor for 8 years in the Woodside inn , and made many friends over the years, guests and workmates alike. I recently decided that I needed a change, so have now gone over to housekeeping, which is a complete contrast as, in the Woodside I talked all day to passing people, and now I work alone cleaning. No stress, just hard work but very enjoyable as I am left to my own devices and trusted to get on with the job. My husband also works here first as a warden then in housekeeping.

It is a great and varied job and I am looking forward to new challenges as the holiday village grows and to ensure each guest has a holiday to remember and cherish!

Having worked at Sandy Balls for over 10 years, I very much enjoy my time here and feel a valued member of the Sandy Balls team.

My title is Retail Team Leader at the Forest Hub, this is the centre for cycle hire, camping equipment and a retail area for clothes outdoor sports equipment and gifts and toys.  It is also the centre for booking the activities that occur each week.  This means that I am dealing with a huge variety of work, situations and people which can present challenges and at times requires patience and diplomacy!  But there are not many days I do not go home with a smile on my face!!

Another aspect of my job is to supervise and train the assistants which join us through the busy key periods. For a lot of them this is their first job, so watching them grow and develop is incredibly rewarding. This is also how I started my journey with Sandy Balls working holidays whilst at school and university.

It is a great and varied job and I am looking forward to new challenges as the holiday village grows and to ensure each guest has a holiday to remember and cherish!!!

My career has continued to grow and after Sandy Balls invested in me to do a degree in Holiday Park Management in 2009 I haven’t looked back

I joined the team at Sandy Balls in 2000 as a receptionist and worked my way up to assistant team leader then the team leader role of reception. That role gave me a diverse amount of work experience including problem solving, team leadership and, innovative thinking. My career has continued to grow and after Sandy Balls invested in me to do a degree in Holiday Park Management in 2009 I haven’t looked back and after 15 years I have become a fully-fledged manager for 4 years and loving my job! The work experience I have gained from Sandy Balls is second to none. Confidence, knowledge, drive and an ability to think on my feet.

FAQ’S

How long the vacancies are usually advertised for?

The period of time a vacancy will be advertised for will depend on a number of factors related to the role and the volume of applicants we receive. We would therefore encourage you to apply early as there may be circumstances where we close vacancies early due to the volume of applications we receive. You can set up job alerts and we will alert you as soon as a new job is posted which meets your criteria.

How will I find out if my application has been successful?

Once we have received your application you will receive a response confirming this. If you have not been invited to interview within 2 weeks of your application on this occasion you have not been successful. We would like to keep your details on file for six months, please let us know if you do not wish this to happen.

How do I apply for a seasonal role?

We have seasonal roles available, and usually start advertising for these around March/April. Look out for our open days or you can send your application in.

When will you take references from my current employer?

We only take up reference from your current employer once an offer of employment has been accepted.

What do I need to bring to interview?

When you come for interview please bring with you the following information:

  • Completed application form
  • Proof of Identification – Driving licence, birth certificate or passport
  • Proof of National Insurance – P45, Payslip, Letter from HMRC
  • Certificates – any relevant qualifications

Is there anything I need to do before I start working?

We will send out an offer letter, terms and conditions of employment as well as a personal details form. You will need to return these at least 48 hours before you start.
